Finance, Work + Family, Workplace Issues

The only consistency at the moment seems to be upheaval and change. Women are relaying to me about their unexpected job losses, business closures and the effect the sudden down turn in trade is having on them both business wise and personally.
For many the increased emotional strain and constant fear of what the future holds is almost too much. It’s during these times that the networks we build become our only safety net. For those facing change it’s really important to remain confident and know that there are people who care about you personally and what’s happening in your corner. Just talking through how you’re feeling about changes happening in your life can be helpful.
But last week across my desk came a great resource that I thought was worth a mention. It’s a user-friendly booklet produced by Beyond Blue in response to the current economic downturn - ‘Taking Care of Yourself After Retrenchment or Financial Loss’. The book is FREE but more importantly it’s an excellent tool for helping women dust off, pick up the pieces and move on to bigger and better things. Share your knowledge of the book with others.

Aussie businesswomen making their mark in the UK are once again being given the opportunity to be recognised for their business success and entrepreneurship. Thousands of women leave Australia each year to participate in the UK economy and it’s those women who the ‘2009 Australian Women of the Year in the UK Awards’ seek to identify. You may not have heard of the awards before, they commenced in 08 and with the support of Advance and Qantas they have grown to be a very impressive affair indeed. If you have a work colleague or friend currently working in the UK and she’s achieving great things then you have until Feb 6 to get her hat into the circle for judging. Dove tailing into International Women’s Day celebrations the winners will be announced at a ceremony being held at Australia House on The Strand on March 6. We look forward to some of our UK based WNA Members receiving accolades whilst working in the UK.

Business Trends, Just for Women

It’s satisfying to know that although governments and corporates across Australia are clueless in accepting women in business as a serious market segment globally, there are growing indications of respect for female entrepreneurs along with a commercial pursuit for the money women control.
Following the opening last year of In Good Company’s unique office space for businesswomen in downtown New York, the trend continues with Dubai’s Eve Tower a 20 story office building under construction and due for completion in 2010 which will be dedicated specifically to women entrepreneurs. Whilst men will be allowed to work there, only women will be able to own office space, and women will enjoy special entrances, elevators and car parks. Wouldn’t it be great to see an Aussie based corporate office provider stepping up to the challenge?
